What I’m going to introduce is the animation movie “The Chapter of Atonement (or Recollection)”(「追憶編」in Japanese) in Samurai X series. I came across this animation movie twenty years ago. This is a 1999 work. In the era when hand-drawn drafts were used, this film was the first choice for both the picture and the soundtrack. It was even modified in many places to be more real than the original. The characters are more real and even more popular. The last chapter Annowu The leader told another point of this story: people are carrying their own karma. No matter from the style of painting, the background of the times, the narrative or the music, this film has given me great spiritual touch, so that I still can’t forget this film so far. The editing, rhythm, camera transfer, montage application, various techniques of this movie are all too artistic.
OST
The OST was recorded by Taku Iwasaki, a Japanese animation musician(52 year old) who was born in Tokyo. I am not very familiar with this animated music producer, but the work he scored is the one that impressed me the most. This album is absolutely awesome, it mixes beautiful piano, harp, bell, drum, flute and various orchestra elements, which strike people’s hearts and makes you almost immersive in that era. You just listen to it, I believe it will make you can’t help to cry, make you as if seeing the turbulent era of Meiji revolution in Japan 150 years ago. Following songs are recorded in the OST.

#1 In Memories: A Boy Meets the Man: this sound track is the most core, soul part in the whole album. It tells how Kenshin died with his family in that turbulent era, met his master, and then talks the memories with his most unforgettable lover Tomoe, as well as the final curtain call and withdrawal from the era. In this soundtrack you will hear owlet tweeting, fox calling, and understand that a fierce war is about to start. This is the must-listen song in the album.
Following is the final scene of Trust and Betrayal. “In Memories” is recorded in this scene. Kenshin burned up the cabin which he ever lived together with Tomoe and left for creating a new era “Meiji”.
#13 Sound of snow falling: this song tells how Samurai X and Tomoe lived incognito as husband and wife in the Yoinosato Mountain.
#7 Quiet life: this song describes Tomoe, the most important woman in Kenshin’s life. You can feel and touch her, an elegant young woman with kindness, tolerance and mysterious family background.
Chapter1. Hangman
While being escorted by human traffickers, the team encountered robbers.
Several sisters in the same group tried desperately to protect the young Kenshin, but the cruel robbers killed them one by one. One of the sisters begged little Kenshin to live for them. At this moment, Kenshin’s Master known as Hiko Kiyoshiro, happened to meet him and rescued Kenshin after cutting the bandit. Kenshin not only buried the slain human trafficker team and several sisters, but also buried the bandits. This move left a deep impression on Hiko and made him take Shinta as a disciple. He changed Shinta’s name to “Kenshin”, thinking that this name is more suitable for a swordsman. After many years of training, the only way to hold on to the promise of helping the weak and innocent is to join the revolution and overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate Kenshin and his master Seijuro Hiko had a quarrel and left. After going down the mountain, Kenshin joined the squad organized by Shinsaku Takasugi, a reformer of the Changzhou feudal clan, and was quickly appreciated by Kogoro Katsura, and was recruited as his killer. In 1864, in order to perform the mission, 15-year-old Kenshin and Iizuka who was in charge of the aftermath came to Kyoto to perform the “Tenchu” mission. Chapter2. Stray cat
Kenshin took the fainted woman to the hut where he and the Changzhou Fans settled. The next day, the woman said that she was called Tomoe and that she had nowhere to go, and Kenshin left it behind. After Kenshin and others talked with Kogoro Katsura, on the one hand, Katsura Iizuka found out the details of Tomoe. On the other hand, due to the ambush, everyone suspected that there were some members of the Changzhou Clan insider. After Iizuka reported that Tomoe was not suspicious, Katsura Kogoro asked her to become Kenshin’s “scabbard” to prevent Kenshin from turning into a crazy sword and bringing tragedy.
On the night of June 5, 1864, at the Ikedaya meeting where the reformers gathered, Kogoro Katsura and Miyabe had a dispute and finally broke up. The meeting was known to the Shinsengumi under the guardianship of Kyoto. The Shinsengumi attacked Ikedaya, and the Reformers suffered heavy losses. After the Ikedaya incident, Katsura Kogoro arranged for Kenshin and Tomoe to travel to Otsu(a place located near Kyoto) as a couple to escape the limelight. When asked by the florist owner who Kenshin is, Tomoe replied that she was Kenshin’s wife.
Chapter3. Yoinosato Mountain
Kenshin and Tomoe lived a peaceful life in the Yoinosato mountain village of men and women farming. At this time, Iizuka disguised himself to bring new news from the outside world, and left his own medicinal burden, so that Kenshin disguised as a pharmacist to make a living. A few months later, just when Tomoe began to adapt to the role of Yakushi’s wife, her brother Enishi found her and secretly revealed to her that the shogunate killer group “Annotake”, who was assigned to track and assassinate Kenshin Ambush nearby, waiting for an opportunity to avenge her fiance. Tomoe sent her brother, Enishi away with anxiety. It was at this moment that Tomoe realized that she had given up revenge and fell in love with Kenshin. At this time Kenshin has also fallen in love with Xuedaiba. The next morning, Tomoe left the house, trying to trick the shogunate into giving up their hunt for Kenshin. After Tomoe’s disappearance, Iizuka came to find Kenshin. He told Kenshin that Tomoe was a spy and she was with her accomplices. He also revealed to Kenshin that Tomoe was the fiancee of Kiyo who had been killed by Kenshin. However, Kenshin at this time didn’t know that Iizuka was the real traitor.
Chapter4. Cross wound
On the way to search for Tomoe, Kenshin was attacked by an ambush killer successively, and his hearing and vision were severely damaged. On the other hand, the killer group also discovered Xuedaiba’s betrayal, and in turn hijacked Tomoe to intimidate Kenshin. When facing the last opponent, Kenshin, who was seriously injured, had little strength to fight back. At this moment, Tomoe blocked between the two to protect Kenshin. This also caused Kenshin to hurt Tomoe seriously while killing his opponent. After cutting a second scar on Kenshin’s cheek, Tomoe finally passed away.
Kenshin blames himself for the death of Tomoe. He vowed to fight for the era that Katsura Kogoro hopes for. After that, he will continue to fight to protect the innocent but not to kill. Katsura Kogoro tells Kenshin that he sent a new assassin to kill the real rape. After burning down the hut where she lived with Tomoe, Kenshin Himura returned to the center of the stage of the Reform Incident under the name of “Man Slashing the Swordsman”. When the Tokugawa shogunate was about to end, Kenshin met Shinsengumi’s captain Okita Souji and his future opponent Saitoichi for the first time. With the end of the Bakumatsu reform activities, Ren Zhandakasai also disappeared. At the end of the story, Kenshin returned to the tomb of the traffickers who had buried him when he was a child, and put Tomoe’s scarf on the grave. Soon after, Hiko Kiyojiro, who was passing by here, noticed the scarf and realized that Kenshin had finally learned his lesson.s
